Byakuya Kuchiki is het achtentwintigste hoofd van de nobele Kuchiki clan, een van de vele vier nobele huishoudens in Soul Society. Als zodanig handelt Byakuya volgens een aristocratische methode: hij is de hele tijd stil en apathisch in de richting van verschillende mensen.
Byakuya draagt het gebruikelijke captain uniform samen met een wit hoofdstuk aangeduid als een kenseikan (symboliserend zijn nobele rang als het toppunt van het Kuchiki huishouden) en een witte sjaal gemaakt door de greep wever, Tsujishirō Kuroemon III.
